Marie Curie National Day of Reflection: design for mass participation

Led by Marie Curie, the UK’s largest end-of-life care charity, the National Day of Reflection occurs annually on 23 March, the anniversary of the UK’s first Covid lockdown.

For 2022 we conceived and designed the concept of Walls of Reflection, which communities, schools and workplaces could create themselves using a simple guide and templates we developed.

Over 150 Walls of Reflection were created across the UK in 2022 using the materials designed by us in partnership with the team at Marie Curie.

The barriers to communities making their own Walls of Reflection were reduced to a minimum through the design of a set of supporting materials which could be easily printed out on home printers.

The design theme used a yellow petal device, one in all four corners. This effectively defined the area of each wall, and created a flexible element that could be used across the whole campaign.

A series of frames were supplied, some empty, some filled with suitable quotes. This allowed people to add their own memories and mementos to the walls.

The templated elements enabled people of all ages and abilities to celebrate and commemorate their loved ones in a myriad of different ways.

In partnership with Artventurers and Twinkl, we also supplied interactive materials to support those grieving, including children.

The design theme also worked seamlessly across social media, further enabling widespread participation and the creation of a virtual Wall of Reflection online.

We designed and provided customisable posters that community groups used to recruit volunteers and encourage participation in events at the walls.

“Purpose Done Right brought focus and energy to the National Day of Reflection. The Walls of Reflection provided a moving focal point to the day which struck the right tone between commemoration and celebration.”
